Why is this the makeup policy?
All of the teachers, myself included, are independently contracted by Long & McQuade; we are not employees. This means if a student does not pay for a lesson we do not receive our commission for that lesson. Long & McQuade's cancellation policy across all Lesson Centres requires two week's notice for any cancellation to be free of charge. This provides job security for the teachers, as contract work like this is highly unpredictable. This store policy is one reason Long & McQuade is able to bring in and retain such high quality teachers: a layer of job protection not afforded by totally independent teaching work.
Long & McQuade does not provide credits or refunds for any missed lesson with less than two weeks’ notice and makeups are fully at the discretion of the teacher.
All of the teachers here have their own makeup policies. Missed lessons are a half hour of our time where we are unable to book another paying student. I am happy to provide makeup lessons with a little bit of notice and do my absolute best to accommodate students. I know that life is unpredictable sometimes and you can't always know two weeks in advance. I want to build a supportive studio where I respect your time and build positive relationships with my students so we can continue to make music.
However, I do have to set boundaries to support myself as I have ~30 students and scheduling is tight. With my specific time constraints I am unable to accommodate same-day cancellations.
